EXPLORE REELTIME

The stories behind the screen

Explore cinema architecture and local history, from Barry's Theatre Royal to Dreamland in Margate, with clear distinctions between former venues and current visits.

A cinema name can preserve a local memory long after the building, its operator or the way it is used has changed. Our histories begin with the place itself and follow the evidence: archive records, heritage descriptions and dated accounts.

Three ways to explore

The Theatre Royal in Barry is a story researched through surviving records of a demolished venue. Dreamland Cinema in Margate offers an architectural story beside a wider amusement and events site. Sittingbourne's New Century Cinema shows why successive names and closure periods need their own dates.

Each article makes clear what the history establishes and where present-day information comes from. A current cinema elsewhere in the town is identified separately, so its address and programme are not confused with the earlier building.

History within a visitor guide

Some stories sit alongside practical cinema information. Read about the Orpheus site in Bristol, the Plaza in Dorchester, the Carlton in Westgate-on-Sea and Cannock's picture-house building.

For these places, check the dated status note before planning a visit. Heritage interest, a restored exterior and a current film programme answer different questions. Use a specific operator announcement to establish any tour or interior access.

Follow the evidence yourself

Our guide to researching a cinema provides a practical claim log and a sequence for matching names, addresses and dates. Start with one question, keep the source reference, and separate what you know from what you are still trying to establish.

Historical images can be revealing, but their dates and reuse terms matter. We link to archive records and identify the basis for any images used here. The editorial policy explains how sources, uncertainty and meaningful updates are handled.
