Theatre Royal, Barry: history and cinema today
Explore the former Theatre Royal on Broad Street, its surviving archive record and a clearly separate route to present-day cinema at Barry's Memo Arts Centre.
Glamorgan Archives records cinema use until 2008 and subsequent demolition.
Source checked . This is a dated source check, not a live opening-status feed.
The Theatre Royal is a former, demolished venue. This page concerns the cinema historically listed on Broad Street in Barry. For a film visit today, the Memo Arts Centre is a separate venue with its own programme and access arrangements.
The distinction is useful if you have arrived with an old cinema name, a remembered address or a link in a local directory. A surviving listing can identify a historical place without providing current information about a building or business.
The Theatre Royal in the archive
Glamorgan Archives dates the Theatre Royal to 1909 and records cinema use until 2008. Its article, published on 11 December 2020, confirms that the building had subsequently been demolished. The historical Welsh Icons directory places the Theatre Royal on Broad Street.
A particularly useful surviving source is a 1922 sale catalogue, reference DSA/6/575, described by Glamorgan Archives. It offered the Theatre Royal and Silver Cinema together. The archive explains that film exhibition was combined with a portion of the year devoted to live entertainment, including opera. The catalogue also describes seating and decoration, giving researchers more to work with than an exterior photograph alone.
These records invite different questions. A sale catalogue can help reconstruct how a building was presented to potential buyers; a programme might show what an audience could see on a particular night; a dated photograph can establish what part of the exterior looked like at that moment. Each has a different purpose, and none should silently stand in for the others.
A short, sourced timeline
| Date or period | What the record supports |
|---|---|
| 1909 | Construction, as recorded by Glamorgan Archives. |
| 1922 | The illustrated sale catalogue provides a detailed historical snapshot. |
| Until 2008 | Cinema use, according to the archive's later account. |
| By the archive's December 2020 article | Demolition had occurred; this is not a precise demolition date. |
The timeline deliberately separates an event date from the date of the source that reports it. The archival article establishes demolition by its publication date, but it does not give an exact day or year for the demolition itself.
Follow the surviving records
Start with the archive's article, then use the catalogue route on the Glamorgan Archives website and search the reference DSA/6/575. Keep the reference with any notes so that you can return to the same item or ask a focused research question.
For a deeper investigation, build a list of unresolved questions rather than trying to fill every gap immediately. Useful questions include which parts of a sale description can be checked against plans, whether an advertised sale actually went ahead, and which name was used in a particular decade. Record answers only when a source supports them.
If you want to publish a photograph or catalogue illustration, check the rights and reproduction arrangements for that item. Linking to a record is a useful way to let others inspect the evidence while you establish what reuse is permitted. Our cinema-history research guide includes a claim log you can adapt.
Cinema in Barry today: the Memo Arts Centre
The Memo Arts Centre's cinema page describes film screenings at its Gladstone Road venue, CF62 8NA. Follow its What's On programme for actual dates. Its cinema information discusses daily screenings as a development ambition, so this guide does not promise a film every day.
| Venue | Location | What this guide describes | Next useful step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theatre Royal | Broad Street, Barry | A demolished historical cinema | Read the archive record and follow its catalogue reference. |
| Memo Arts Centre | Gladstone Road, Barry | A separate arts centre that advertises cinema activity | Check the Memo's current event listing and booking information. |
The Memo's access page describes limited wheelchair spaces in specific auditorium areas, no wheelchair positions in the balcony seating area and direct box-office booking for access requirements. It also identifies Hynt membership. These are Memo arrangements; they are not facilities of the former Theatre Royal and do not establish participation in a different ticket scheme.
Plan the actual performance
Choose the film and date first, then check the event's start time, age rating, seating arrangement and any screening label. If you need a particular lighting or sound environment, ask about that session rather than relying only on a general description of relaxed cinema.
Before travelling, make sure your confirmation says Memo Arts Centre and uses its current address. For a practical sequence, follow how to find current cinema listings and the cinema-visit checklist.
Historical sources and the Memo information above were checked on 4 November 2026. Current performance details remain with the operator.
